How it works

Break-even calculator in four steps

The same formula accountants use — explained in plain words.

  1. 1

    Add fixed monthly costs

Rent, salaries, utilities and anything you pay whether you sell or not.

    Step 1
  2. 2

    Enter your average order

Average bill per order (total sales ÷ number of orders).

    Step 2
  3. 3

    Add variable costs

Food cost % plus packaging, card fees and app commissions as a % of sales.

    Step 3
  4. 4

    Read your target

Break-even sales = fixed costs ÷ (1 − variable cost %). Divide by your average order for orders per month and per day.

    Step 4

Cut fixed costs, lower food cost through better buying and portioning, raise the average order with combos, and shift orders from apps to your own online menu.

Yes — include what you need to pay yourself, otherwise “break-even” hides an unpaid owner.
